Essential Oils and Why I use Them ... Sometimes

prairiestatesoap

Essential oils. They are very "on trend" right now as people are searching for more holistic ways to treat various complaints/ailments.

I started taking herbal supplements about 20 years ago, when i was going through a lot of turmoil and upheaval in my life. The supplements definately helped me get through some ... stuff.

I don't use supplements/herbal remedies as much these days, but I believe that there is value in using them appropriately. APPROPRIATELY.

I get asked if I use essential oils or fragrance oils in my soaps. I use RESPONSIBLY MANUFACTURED fragrance oils. Phlalate and parabens free fragrance oils.

Phlalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more durable., and used to help dissolve other materials. They can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system and are weak endocrine disruptors and androgen blocking chemicals. I dont want that in my soap.

Parabens are chemicals that are commomly used as preservatives in products. Theu can trigger irritation and allergic reactions in the skin, especially to sensitive, damaged, or broken skin. Studies show that parabens can be especially inflammatory to those with pre-existing conditions of psoriasis, excema, or a pattern of contact dermatitis. See me raising my hand here???

Why not use essential oils in soap? Because

1) Soap is considered a "wash off" product. The benefit of essential oils is lost.

2) The scent associated with essential oils does not stick in soap. There will be no scent after about a month.

I do use essential oils in LEAVE ON products, such as lotion bars. Just cocoa butter, beeswax, grapeseed or jojoba oil. I use them in shower steamers - the essential oils get diffused into the steam of the shower, along with menthol, peppermint, or eucalyptus. I have foot bombs and foot lotion infused with natural peppermint oil.

I continue to develop more products using essential oils, but i do so responsibly, in order to obtain the greatest benefit from them. I use my own products exclusively. Nothing gets put out in the public eye until I am happy with it ... and I am very particular. But I want amazing smelling products as well! It's a happy balance - and sometimes a fine line - that I walk in order to put a prioduct out there that I am proud of!
